Sedation dentistry is nothing but helping the patients keep calm during any dental procedures. From invasive procedures like tooth extractions to a simple tooth cleaning, sedation dentistry can be used. It may be administered orally through pills or laughing gas (Nitrous Oxide) made to inhale through a small mask. Sometimes a combination of both is used.
Oral sedation usually provides light to medium sedation to the patients. This medication is strong enough to make patients feel sleepy and therefore relaxed, which helps alleviate stress or anxiety associated with undergoing dental work. The patients will remain conscious enough to follow the dentist’s instructions, but the effects of oral sedation last longer than that of Nitrous Oxide. Patients who opt for sedation dentistry are advised to have someone drive them to and from their visits, in addition to monitoring them for up to 24 hours after their visit.
Nitrous Oxide, on the other hand, induces a feeling of euphoria and has a mild sedation. These are often used in Pediatric dentistry.
